The Archives – The Lyric Book “Don’t Wake Me Up Just Yet”

The first time I ever fell in love it was with my high school sweetheart. It took me a very long time to get over her. One of the hardest parts of not being able to get over someone is when you see them again and you begin to go through the motions of your old selves, but for some reason you know it isn’t going to work. There might be a moment while you are hugging and talking where you want to pretend, just for a little that it’s ten years prior and all those conversations of getting married and being happy ever after are still possibilities at some indeterminate time in your future.

Don’t Wake Me Up – Version 1

Her and I sat down for a couple drinks
And I looked right into her and I started to think
We’d pick right up where we left off and I knew exactly what to say
I was gonna start by bringing up the good ol’ days

The kiss I stole on our first date
Loosing our innocence together on her birthday
After a few minutes in
I knew those old sparks would get a second breath of oxygen

If only I could stay here for a while
Hiding out beside my archives
If only I could stay here for a while
Dreaming away

Don’t wake me up just yet
Don’t wake up
Don’t wake me up just yet
Don’t wake me up

She told me she couldn’t wait an entire lifetime for me to come around
She was happy for the first time in years and told me of the love she had found
A cruel reality check for a complacent lover’s silent song
The price you pay for leaving someone on the backburner for too long

I didn’t say too much after that
And eventually she hailed herself a cab
If only I could stay here for a while
Hiding out beside my archives
Dreaming away

Don’t wake me up just yet
Don’t wake up
Don’t wake me up just yet
Don’t wake me up

I had to chase her outside
And if only for a moment or two
Hold onto her dear life
I just wanted to pretend
That this was hello again

Don’t wake me up just yet
Don’t wake up
Don’t wake me up just yet
Don’t wake me up

Don’t Wake Me Up – Final Version

Her and I sat down for a of couple drinks
As they worked their way into us at I started to think
We’d pick right up where we left off and I knew exactly what to say
I was gonna start by bringing up the good ol’ days

The kiss I stole on our first date
Loosing our innocence together on her birthday
After a few minutes in
I knew those old sparks would get a second breath of oxygen

If only I could stay here for a while
Hiding out inside my archives
If only I could stay here for a while
Dreaming away

Don’t wake me up just yet
Don’t wake up
Don’t wake me up just yet
Don’t wake me up

She told me she held out for about five years
Passed up a doctor, an actor, a lawyer and a cashier
But she needed to be more than just a verse in some song
I guess even love spoils if you neglect it for too long

I didn’t say too much after that
And eventually she hailed herself a cab

If only I could stay here for a while
Hiding out beside my archives
Dreaming away

Don’t wake me up just yet
Don’t wake up
Don’t wake me up just yet
Don’t wake me upI had to chase her outside

And if only for a moment or two
Hold onto her for dear life
I just wanted to pretend
That this was hello again

Don’t wake me up just yet
Don’t wake up
Don’t wake me up just yet
Don’t wake me up
