The Archives – The Lyric Book “Cityfolk”

Have you ever lived in a city? I have. Boston MA. Although there is a certain brotherly love under the cold exterior of some people, living in the city, in such close proximity to so many people, yet interacting in meaningful, emotional ways with so little of them, has a certain wear on you. This song is about the coldness that arrises from the “dog eat dog” mentality that is prevalent in capitalist, highly populated areas.

Cityfolk – Version 1

Into their cards with their cuban cigars
A dime a day keeps the doctor away
A foot chained to time and the other in line
“We’ll die another day”
And all of the best feel the beat in their chest
and how the weight of the world is so immense
But there’s not much to tell when your souls in a well
Crying to let it out

In this city
The better half of us aren’t pretty
In this city
Hearts sealed shut to keep the other man from winning

Can’t spare a dime everything will be fine
When you’re too far down the road to even hear em’
Everyone knows that’s the way that it goes
Just give thanks that you don’t have to be ’em
Wait for light, less it doesn’t feel right
Then we’ll run these children down
No hand in hand, only man against man
Take a look around

In this city
The better half of us aren’t pretty
In this city
Hearts sealed shut to keep the other man from winning

Cityfolk – Final Version

Into his jag looking rough from the jet lag
Almost half done with his day
A social engineer with a phone in her ear
Get the hell out of her way

Pushing through the mob to their workaday jobs
Clawing their way up the bourgeoisie
They say “you’ll do it too, once the interest accrues
Just you wait and see”

In this city
It’s take your chance and save your pity
In this city
It’s hurry up to keep some other one from winning

Some need a dime or a just moment of your time
But the motives in the mirror may be different than they appear
There’s no company name on this food chain
And it’s nothing but a jungle in here

In this city
It’s take your chance and save your pity
In this city
It’s hurry up to keep some other one from winning

Lions and Tiger’s have to eat
Whether it’s the Amazon or the concrete
And think fast, you don’t want to become just another piece of meat

In this city
It’s take your chance and save your pity
In this city
It’s hurry up to keep some other one from winning
